A true story of the love and struggles of a young military wife with four young children under the age of five years old, one of which is severely disabled, (born without arms and legs). Her husband was at war during the Viet Nam conflict. The daily obstacles she had to face alone in Alaska would make the ordinary person give up. Her strength in dealing with unusual circumstances will make you cry, laugh and wonder where it will all end. What could have been a tragedy ends in triumph and will make you grateful for what you have.
Bobbie Jean has traveled extensively as a Military Wife, living in Alaska and nine other states on the Mainland. She survived the Great Alaskan Earthquake in 1964. This book is dedicated to all Military Families and to caregivers and to all who are suffering...

ALASKA, I REMEMBER THE DAYS
We lived in Alaska in 1962-1965, surviving "Big Alaskan Quake." This happened while living in Mountain View, Alaska (near Anchorage) while stationed at Ft. Richardson. Two of my four children were born at Elmendorf Air Force Base. (I was 19 years old and had four children by the time I was 22.)
About ten years later we were stationed at Ft. Wainwright Alaska in Fairbanks. It was my first experience as a very young mother in a remote area and all alone with no family to help me with my children, so I wasn't too keen the first time I lived there and the cost of living was so expensive, we barely survived. It was hard to appreciate the good things.
The second time I lived in Alaska I came back with four children and a severely disabled child, who actually got to attend regular school at Hunter Elementary School in Fairbanks. By then, the children enjoyed the activities of ice skating, snow mobiles, skiing, sledding, watching dog sled races, learning about the Alaskan Indians culture, watching the Northern Lights and being involved in the many activities of that remote area.
I remember a small shack that I lived in where I saw the most gorgeous view of Mt. McKinley, watched the Northern Lights and listened to KJNP, (King Jesus North Pole) radio during the long lonely winter months away from my parents and sister. That radio station may not be there anymore, but the gospel music gave me great comfort during those times.
My children enjoyed going to North Pole Alaska and seeing Santa Claus. We have many special memories. Many times the moose came right up to my door and rooted through the trash can.
I went blueberry picking in the summer and remember hearing a bear nearby in the bushes. I didn't have a gun, so I slowly and quietly crept back to my car and drove away. Also, I remember eating Bear meat and Moose meat. Oh, yes, I remember looking up at the huge Stuffed Polar Bear in the lobby at the airport when I arrived in Alaska.
I remember the time I was driving alone on a dirt road with snow packed down on it in the early morning. A moose was standing in the middle of the road facing me and wouldn't move. I was about 50 feet from him. All of sudden he started snorting and hoofing and was getting into the "attack: mode. I turned off my car engine and sat there for the longest time hoping he would leave. Soon, he must have realized that my station wagon was not a "threat" so he moved on. What wonderful experiences our family had in Alaska!!
